Guest Speaker, Arrival Reception: April 9, 2008

Tom Fenton
Tom Fenton, in his long journalistic experience as senior foreign correspondent for CBS News has reported on everything from the fall of the Shah of Iran that marked the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, to its latest manifestation in al Qaeda and the world-wide jihad movement. As the author of Bad News: The Decline of Reporting, the Business of News, and the Danger to Us All, he is now a leading critic of the journalistic failures that left America unprepared for 9/11, and of the mainstream media's continued addiction to a diet of shallow news and infotainment that has kept Americans still unprepared for a new and hostile world.

Fenton began his career as a foreign correspondent for CBS News in 1970; prior to that he reported for the Baltimore Sun, after an earlier career as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He was the first American TV correspondent to cover the freedom movement in Communist East Germany. During the 1980s he chronicled the collapse of communism throughout Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. In the mid 1990s, he was stationed in Moscow, where he covered the chaotic transition to capitalism and the war in Chechnya.

His career as a foreign correspondent took him to nearly every major European and Middle Eastern story of the day-from the 1966 Six Day War to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has also covered hundreds of international summits, natural disasters, riots, the civil war in Northern Ireland, famine in Africa, the intifada in Palestine, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the death of Princess Diana, and the new American war against terror.

Fenton is the recipient of four Emmy Awards, a Columbia University Dupont Award, a Georgetown University Weintal Award, and numerous Overseas Press Club awards for his reporting.

He is currently based in London, England, and works as a freelance commentator for BBC World and other media and writes a weekly web column at www.theworld.org.
